NAC is Back

In the video from MedCram, Dr. Roger Seheult discusses the return of NAC, otherwise known as n-acetylcysteine. The drug is back for sale on the Amazon website.

MedCram and NAC discussions

MedCram first discussed NAC as a supplement  back in May 2020 on MedCram video 69. This video referenced an article that discussed how NAC was associated with a decrease in symptoms of over 50% absolute risk reduction in patients with influenza. MedCram also discussed all of the supplements that Dr. Seheult was taking during the COVID-19 pandemic in MedCram video 59.  Dr. Seheult reminds everyone that there was an update with MedCram video 92 that discussed blood clots and how NAC could be of some benefit there. MedCram has also extensively covered further data on NAC as seen in MedCram video 111 and MedCram video 114.

NAC and its uses

NAC is often used in liver toxicity and as a respiratory drug to break up secretions. One of its mechanisms of action is in aiding to regenerate glutathione, which is a major antioxidant and used in many biochemical processes in the body.

Why was NAC removed?

The issue with NAC was that several companies had been marketing NAC as a “treatment” and the FDA sent a letter to multiple companies including Les Labs.  NAC was actually brought to market as a medication originally in 1963 but was never marketed as a dietary supplement.  However in reality, the drug has been used as a dietary supplement for the past 30 years.

Why was NAC reinstated?

There was a large opposition to the FDA’s decision. The Council for Responsible Nutrition and Natural Products Association wrote letters to the FDA back in March 2022.  Now in August 2022, it shows that the FDA may choose to turn a blind eye to NAC being sold as a dietary supplement based on recent FDA correspondence.  Amazon had initially voluntarily pulled all of its NAC products off its shelves, but now with the latest letters from the FDA, has allowed NAC products to be sold again.
