Three New Coronavirus Videos & Dr. Seheult in Forbes

We’ve released three videos packed with information this week, regarding the novel coronavirus outbreak and the new names of the virus – SARS-CoV-2 and disease that it causes, COVID-19 – given by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, check out Dr. Seheult’s feature in Forbes, where he discusses the role of social media and the responsibility of producing accurate and timely updates on coronavirus and other medical subjects.

Coronavirus Update 14 – Hospital Spread of Infection, WHO Allowed in China, & N-95 Masks

In our 14th video on the novel coronavirus, Dr. Seheult provides updates on China and their decision to allow the World Health Organization (WHO) to offer assistance with the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic.

Moreover, Dr. Seheult dives into this JAMA article, which looked at 138 patients admitted to a hospital in Wuhan and what happened to them throughout the month of January. Dr. Seheult explores the timeline and types of symptoms and demographic information, as well as rates of ICU admission, recovery, and death.

In this video, we also look at rates of nosocomial infection among healthcare workers and patients who were hospitalized for other reasons. This information illustrates the transmissibility of the novel coronavirus, so Dr. Seheult revisits the importance of proper handwashing and mask use in the hospital setting.

Coronavirus Update 15 – Underreporting, Prevention, & 24-day Incubation?

Now that we have information from the WHO in China, we know that the numbers of SARS-CoV-2 cases are likely underreported, due to only severe cases in the hospital being tested. Meanwhile, total deaths continue to increase by larger numbers, yet the total number of recovered patients is growing the fastest.

A new pre-peer-reviewed paper was released that details 1,099 novel coronavirus patients in China, which found a slightly lower median age, slightly higher percentage of males, lower ICU admission rate, and lower death rate than the JAMA article mentioned above. Additionally, while the median incubation range was 3.0 days, there was an interesting outlier of a 24-day incubation period, for which Dr. Seheult discusses possible explanations.

To date, we’ve offered a variety of prevention strategies for the novel coronavirus. In terms of treatment, however, we need randomized, placebo-controlled trials to know what works — which are impossible to attain at this early juncture of an epidemic. But, if SARS-CoV-2 leads to other complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there are several evidence-based treatments that we talk about in our video, How Coronavirus Kills: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) & Treatment.

Coronavirus Update 16 – Strengthening Your Immune Response to Viral Infections (COVID-19)

In our 16th and most recent update, Dr. Seheult discusses the new nomenclature for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and the disease it causes, COVID-19.

He then talks about immunity and how sleep is one of the greatest factors in boosting resilience to viral infections, like SARS-CoV-2. He includes various research articles to support the important role of sleep, especially slow wave sleep, and its impact on growth hormone production.
