Coronavirus Spread, Quarantine, Projections, & Vaccine
In the third video in our series of coronavirus updates, Dr. Seheult walks through the most recent tally of confirmed coronavirus cases, as well as death numbers, current quarantine measures, the predicted timeline for this outbreak’s peak impact, and updates on two potential vaccine releases.
Currently, there have been over 9,700 confirmed cases, and at least 213 people have died. In addition, there is a case in Canada that could possibly represent the first instance of human-to-human coronavirus transfer outside of China.
Moreover, 50 million people have been quarantined in China, and the United States has banned all nonessential travel to China in an attempt to prevent future spread. Regarding vaccines, both Johnson & Johnson and the NIH have released statements on their predicted vaccine production timelines, which range from three to twelve months.
Coronavirus & Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
Our fourth video on the coronavirus is a recap of ARDS, or acute respiratory distress syndrome, the typical cause of death in those infected. Dr. Seheult reviews lung anatomy and how inflammation leads to ARDS.
Current treatment for ARDS involves mechanical ventilation in the ICU setting. Over the past 20 years, doctors and researchers have highlighted three possibilities for improvement in ARDS treatment. Watch the video for more information on treatment using ventilators with low tidal volume, paralysis, and prone body positioning.
