COVID-19 Pandemic Video Updates Continued – Videos 43-45

Amid heightened concern surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve recently released three new videos (with more to come this week) on the latest research and interesting developments with the novel coronavirus. Check out the three videos above, plus many more on the MedCram course website and our YouTube channel for coronavirus updates and lectures on other important medical topics.

Shortages, Immunity, & Can a TB Vaccine (BCG) Help Prevent COVID-19?

In our 43rd COVID-19 video update, Dr. Seheult illustrates the overall landscape of efforts to reduce impact on hospitals, prevent transmission of the virus, strengthen our immune systems, improve medication availability, and more. He goes on to discuss the immune system, its innate and specific components, and the process by which these defend against pathogens. Moreover, he looks at the BCG vaccine – typically given to prevent tuberculosis – which stimulates specific and innate arms of the immune system, which may actually provide some protection against the COVID-19 virus.

Loss of Smell & Conjunctivitis in COVID-19, Is Fever Helpful?

In our 44th coronavirus update, Dr. Seheult talks about two new potential signs of COVID-19 infection: conjunctivitis (pink eye) and anosmia (loss of smell). Thus, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is recommending protection for the mouth, nose, and eyes for anyone caring for patients with COVID-19. Additionally, the President of the UK’s Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Board issued a letter reporting significant increases in numbers of patients testing positive for COVID-19, whose only presenting symptom was anosmia, representing a potential indicator of otherwise asymptomatic vectors.

Moreover, Dr. Seheult continues his lecture on the immune system, discussing the prevalence — and potential benefits — of untreated fever, citing various compelling studies.

Sharing Ventilators, More on Sleep, Immunity, & COVID-19 Prevention

In our 45th COVID-19 update, the United States moves to the top of the global list for total cases, with New York as the epicenter. This leads to a discussion on the risks and benefits of having multiple patients on one ventilator if facing a ventilator shortage. There are many additional challenges inherent with sharing ventilators between multiple patients. Amidst this pandemic, it is likely that clinicians who lack recent ventilator experience (recently graduated, who work in other specialities, recently retired, etc.) may be called upon to help treat patients in the ICU setting.  For this reason, MedCram has developed a free COVID-19 Ventilator Course — an efficient way to learn or review mechanical ventilation.

In continuing the discussion on immunity, Dr. Seheult reiterates the importance of sleep, referencing this study on rhinovirus and immunity and this study on sleep deprivation and immunizations. More info on sleep and the immune system can be found in our 17th coronavirus update video or in our Insomnia Explained Clearly Course.

Dr. Seheult, I enjoy your presentations. Please consider the possible role of Niacin/vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid & niacinamide) on fighting viral infections. This vitamin has traditionally been recognized for cellular metabolism, psychiatric disorders (schizopherenia, anxiety, depression, alcholism), pellagra, and balancing cholesterol (nicotinic acid). There are very few publications about antimicrobial effects of niacin but there appears to be some important indications. From Niacin users (nictinic acid NA) in large doses for cholesterol we normally experience “flushing” of the face and upper body. While this is not a true “fever” it feels very similar to a flu fever. Can this raise the temperature of the nasal cavity enough to fight virus infections by inducing a temporary “fever”? Many users on discussion boards report that they have not had a single cold/flu in years while taking NA. While I do not know of any formal research in this area it is worth noting with the current pandemic.
Another important area of research I found in this link: https://academic.oup.com/cid/article/36/4/453/439703
There is a connection with Niacin and fighting HIV/TB. The paragraphs right before the conclusion section contain key elements of antimicrobial actions. My (limited) understanding is that the current COVID virus uses the same modes of action. From the paper: “The activity of PARP is critical to the integration of foreign DNA, including proviral DNA; inhibition or absence of this enzyme interrupts the HIV life cycle ”
Thanks for posting your videos and considering alternate methods on how to fight this virus. Inducing a “fever” is an old remedy. My father told me about how this was used when he was a boy in the 1930’s to get over flu and infections.

I watch your videos religiously since early January of this year. I’ve dug into the Hydrochloroquine factor even more. I ran across an email chain from someone claiming that venting someone with Covid is dangerous and treating earlier with hydro and zith/Zinc would be better. He stated the reason was covid attached to iron ions in aveloi which is why oxygen saturation drops. Then I came across this Chinese paper above. This was interesting is this actually happening?
