As the world continues to face emerging infectious threats, Dr. Roger Seheult of MedCram provides a timely update on several concerning health developments: the spread of H5N1 avian flu, a growing measles outbreak in the U.S., a mysterious illness cluster in Africa, and recent flu activity trends.
H5N1 Bird Flu: Cross-Species Concerns Grow
New cases of H5N1 avian flu have been confirmed in Idaho dairy cattle—the first such detection since October. The virus has now been found in nearly 1,000 dairy cattle across 17 U.S. states. Troublingly, H5N1 has also spread to domestic cats and even pet food in Washington and Oregon. Isolated cases have also been reported in chickens, with increasing evidence of the virus adapting to infect multiple species.
From 2017–2020, only 46 animal species were infected with H5N1. Since then, that number has skyrocketed to 457, with nearly 27% of infected mammals and 16% of infected birds classified as endangered or vulnerable. Large-scale die-offs, such as the death of over 24,000 sea lions in South America, underline the environmental impact.
Takeaway:
-
People in close contact with livestock or birds should take extra precautions.
-
Immune system support through natural means—like sunlight and temperature regulation—remains key.
-
While vaccines are in development, supplies will initially be limited and targeted toward high-risk workers.
Measles: Rising Cases and Renewed Federal Response
The U.S. is experiencing a noticeable surge in measles, with 164 confirmed cases in early 2025, compared to 285 cases for all of 2024. Most cases are in unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status, and 20% have required hospitalization. Tragically, one child has died.
A recent case in Montgomery County, PA, involved an unvaccinated child who traveled via shuttle bus from JFK Airport, highlighting how easily measles can spread. The CDC offers a weekly update portal for real-time tracking of measles activity.
New HHS Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has emphasized the importance of the MMR vaccine in preventing future outbreaks and pledged strong federal support, especially in Texas where the outbreak has been significant.
Mysterious Illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Two separate clusters of a severe, unexplained illness have emerged in the DRC, particularly in Équateur Province. One cluster saw 24 deaths in a single village with symptoms appearing just one day before death. Common symptoms included fever, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and agitation—primarily affecting young adult males.
Although 50% of those affected tested positive for malaria, the clinical course is not typical. Ebola and Marburg viruses have been ruled out, and officials are also investigating possible chemical exposures (e.g., organophosphates).
This is a rapidly evolving situation with no confirmed cause—yet another reminder of the need for global health surveillance.
Seasonal Flu: A Mixed Picture
After one of the most severe flu seasons in decades, influenza A is finally on the decline. Influenza B, though still a small share of total cases, has not shown a similar drop and bears watching. As spring approaches, overall flu activity is expected to ease—likely due to increasing daylight, which has known benefits for immune regulation.
Supporting Immune Health
Throughout the episode, Dr. Seheult reiterates the importance of natural strategies to boost immune health—highlighting his recent 3.5-hour conversation with Dr. Andrew Huberman. Topics ranged from sunlight and hydrotherapy to immune system optimization and the role of trust in health decision-making. You can find the full episode on the Huberman Lab Podcast.
With multiple outbreaks and unknowns circulating globally, it’s a critical time for public awareness, vaccine readiness, and immune health. Whether you’re a clinician or concerned citizen, staying informed—and proactive—has never been more essential.
