More Videos on COVID-19, the Novel Coronavirus Epidemic

In the past week, we’ve released several video updates on the novel coronavirus epidemic that continues to impact China, Italy, South Korea, and the rest of the world. Here, we bring you highlights from the latest videos and a summary of all the information we’ve shared so far on MedCram.com and our YouTube channel

Antibodies, Case Fatality, Clinical Recommendations, 2nd Infections?

In our 21st video update, Dr. Seheult talks about antibodies and immune responses, including this NPR interview that discusses a company that’s identified specific antibodies in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 and is working on using mice to reproduce these human antibodies in a potential treatment for the novel coronavirus disease.

In addition, Dr. Seheult takes another look at comparisons of COVID-19 to the flu, pointing out the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s calculations of the overall novel coronavirus death rate, placing it in between this year’s flu and the SARS outbreak of 2002.

We also talk about the speculation around the possibility of getting infected twice, as well as practical recommendations for critical care and anesthesiology teams caring for patients with COVID-19 based on information gathered in Canada during the SARS outbreak.

Spread Without Symptoms, Cruise Quarantine, Asymptomatic Testing

Video 22 brings updates on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked outside of Japan, as there are currently over 100 U.S. citizens either aboard the cruise ship or in Japanese hospitals. The CDC has placed these individuals on a mandatory 14-day quarantine before they’re allowed to board flights to the United States.

Dr. Seheult also looks at research on the viral load in a small sample of COVID-19 patients, posted in a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, as well as a perspective on defining the epidemiology of COVID-19 and the necessity of further research.

Infections in Kids & Pregnancy, South Korea, Spillover From Bats

In our 23rd video update, Dr. Seheult looks at information on more than 30 new cases in South Korea that spread within a religious group, as the total number of cases outside of China continues to increase.

Once again, new diagnostic criteria has been determined for COVID-19, amid growing confusion about the reporting of cases in Wuhan. Dr. Seheult discusses this article, which talks about the diagnostic changes, as well as their potential political implications.

Furthermore, Dr. Seheult explains a study on pediatric cases of COVID-19 and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnancy and infants. He also revisits information on the origin of coronavirus, discussing the startling number of coronaviruses present in bats and the relatively high frequency of “spillover” of these viruses into humans.

Infections in Italy, Transmissibility, COVID-19 Symptoms

Video 24 presents a few additional resources for graphs and coronavirus information before discussing the status of COVID-29 outbreaks in Italy and South Korea, as well as the actions taken by each of these countries to try to contain the spread of the virus.

Speaking of containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Dr. Seheult presents research in this JAMA article, which revisits the possibility of asymptomatic transmission.

Vaccine Developments, Italy’s Response, and Mortality Rate Trends

In our most recent video update, Dr. Seheult walks through this Reuters article, which discusses various implications of the novel coronavirus outbreak, ranging from the downturn of new cases in mainland China and increase of cases in countries like Italy, South Korea, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Global economic impacts are also discussed.

In vaccine updates: drugmaker Moderna Inc. shipped its first batch of coronavirus vaccine to the U.S. for human testing, detailed in this Wall Street Journal article. Dr. Seheult illustrates typical vaccine mechanisms compared to Moderna’s experimental vaccine, which injects RNA into cells to produce their own antigens and, thus, antibodies.
