Linoleic Acid; Vaccines; UK COVID 19 Data
In our 112th update on COVID-19, Dr. Seheult starts with an overview of COVID-19 trends from around the globe. He references this comprehensive UK dashboard, which provides statistics on testing, hospitalizations, case numbers, and deaths. Dr. Seheult then discusses this article from Science on linoleic acid, a fatty acid, and its role in possibly preventing the binding of SARS-CoV-2 to ACE-2 receptors. The study does not suggest increasing dietary linoleic acid — as doing so may have undesirable health effects — but rather offers insight into potential therapeutics for SARS-CoV-2.
Remdesivir may not work — Conflicting study results
In update 113 on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Seheult turns his focus to remdesivir, and begins with the final report on remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19 published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In this study, patients treated with remdesivir showed a statistically significant reduction in the number of days to recovery (yet, mortality rate was not significantly lowered). Moreover, various Kaplan-Meier curves suggest that the therapeutic effect of remdesivir decreases the later it is prescribed in the course of COVID-19 infection. However, Dr. Seheult then discusses this large study on remdesivir and three other COVID-19 treatments from the World Health Organization (WHO). This Reuter’s article, which summarizes the data from the WHO, points out that none of the four drug treatments studied (including remdesivir) reduced mortality or the need for ventilation in COVID-19 patients.
COVID-19 Mortality Rate Drops; NAC (N-acetylcysteine) Data
In our 114th COVID-19 update, Dr. Seheult discusses the drop in mortality rate for COVID-19 patients in the United States, examining various possible causes for this decrease. A similar drop in mortality also occurred in England, as suggested by this study. Switching gears, Dr. Seheult revisits the discussion on n-acetylcysteine, or NAC, and reviews this study that looked at the therapeutic effects of intravenous NAC therapy for COVID-19. He also talks about specific considerations used to treat patients with G6PDH (glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase) deficiency, concerns about resulting hemolysis, and the role of intravenous NAC in reversing both hemolysis and COVID-19 symptoms.
Convalescent Plasma
In our 115th COVID-19 video update, Dr. Seheult gives updates on the latest convalescent plasma research, as well as vaccine production progress. This comprehensive study on convalescent plasma and COVID-19 from India indicated no statistically significant difference between the treatment and control groups on patients’ need for supplemental oxygen. Moreover, the editorial released with the study results discusses potential mechanisms behind this, noting that convalescent plasma contains clotting factors that may exacerbate thrombosis in COVID-19. Regarding vaccine trials, enrollment for AstaZeneca and Johnson & Johnson trials has restarted; we’ll cover more on vaccine progress as information becomes available.

Nowadays, the world is facing a pandemic of a newly discovered coronavirus disease, named COVID-19, with 4,037,574 confirmed cases and 279,236 deaths on november 26, 2020, worldwide (1). The most affected countries so far are: People’s Republic of China, the United States of America (USA), Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Iran and the UK (1). CoVs are a group of enveloped viruses with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome that infect the pulmonary system, the intestines, the liver and the nerve cells of animals and humans . The taxonomy of these viruses includes the following genera: Alphacoronavirus, Betacoronavirus, Gammacoronavirus and Deltacoronavirus . In each genus, several species that affect humans include: Human coronavirus 229E, Human coronavirus NL63, Betacoronavirus 1 (Human coronavirus OC43), Human coronavirus HKU1, Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2), Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Infectious bronchitis virus.
