In this video, Dr. Seheult of MedCram discusses the EG.5 COVID-19 sub-variant, and the rise of COVID-19 related hospitalizations. It has been noted that hospitalizations for COVID-19 are increasing steadily. As an ICU doctor, Dr. Seheult reports that none of these patients have gone into the intensive care unit in his personal situation. He states there have been surges like this in previous summers, and so far this is the smallest surge he has seen compared to previous summers.
What is EG.5?
If you look at the Our World in Data there is a slow but certain uptick in the number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the U.S. The uptick is not being seen in other countries at this time. This could be due to a new variant of COVID-19 that is emerging called Eris. It is a variant of interest. It is a descendant of XBB.1.9.2 but has an additional mutation in the spike protein. From spring to summer the predominant variant was the XBB.1.5, and now this is starting to decline and EG.5 is starting to become more predominant. Thus far it does not have any additional virulence compared to previous sub-variants of the virus, and it is not any more easily transmissible. Normally Dr. Seheult says he would follow his county dashboard but they have stopped updating so he is relying on the CDC website which shows at a glance what is happening nationwide throughout all of the counties.
